The Sinking of the U-352
On this day, May 9th, in 1942 my Great Grandfather sunk the German U-boat U-352 and capture the surviving crew. He was the first Coast Guardsmen to received the Navy Cross in WWII. There were only five other Coast Guard recipients of the Navy Cross during WWII.
The U-352 was the first U-boat crew captured during the war and was also the first U-boat sunk by the U.S. Coast Guard.
He also was featured in Life Magazine on December 14th, 1942. There is a good article at Uboatarchive.net. You can also read the entire magazine HERE
